Yeah. Awesome. Say goodbye to 5/15/70 on this site. Publish a portion and pull-down the remainder from LMA. Woo-f*cking-hoo. Thanks fellas. Of course I already have a lossless copy, but it's a shame that this show will not be available(here at LMA) to future listeners.

Well it is a shame that it won't be available here but based on that logic i guess they should never release anything, right? I guess those folks will only have 1500 other shows fall in love with. I would start with 5-1-70, it is a better acoustic set and if they really love it perhaps they will be inspired to purchase DP8 or RT3-3.

Good point!

Better grab this before it goes away! Even if you are ordering!

The tracks not included are certainly worth having, even though most are repeated during the late set:

Friend of the Devil
Candyman (x2)
Cumberland Blues
Cold Jordan
Easy Wind
Attics of My Life

Sadly the dynamite New Riders sets will likely go away as well. So grab these, at least for the gems Mama Tried, Sawmill and and Me and My Uncle with Weir sitting in!

Kindof a shame they didn't include Attics.

Also, apparently the currently circulating versions are all missing Deep Elem from the late show. I never knew that. Dunno if it's enough to convince people to spend 20 something bucks for a 3 minute tune they didn't already have on their circulating copy, but it's worth mentioning.

I too wonder about that cut in St. Stephen. I'm sure it's probably covered. It seems to me that that is a big deciding factor in what they release. It seems that if there is a cut and they can't cleverly disguise it, they usually don't release it (or go the partial route). Though I was REALLY surprised when they released parts of 8/6/74 (of course, "parts," never complete, an argument that both sides have valid points, but personally I'm in the "release complete shows" camp) that they actually used an AUD patch. That's the only case of them doing that that I can think of.

That was a big bummer for me with the "Other One" bonus track from 9/3/72 that was on the 9/21/72 Dick's Pick. There is something like 1:12 missing, and they just cleverly smoothed it over, you wouldn't even notice if you didn't know it was there. I may be nitpicking, but that 1:12 was actually one of my favorite parts of the jam, Bobby plays these really cool chords that are burned into my memory.

I like to support the band and all, but between the "hidden" costs of collecting music like internet, blanks, electricity, etc, I don't think I will buy this one. The Dark Star is good but otherwise these aren't shows I listen to very much. They're ok, but not something I'd get all hot and bothered about an official release like I did with 2/14/68 or something.

I think they've used AUD patches occasionally before....the 7-31-71 Dark Star for instance, and wasn't there one for the 10-21-78 Stella as well? (But yes, sometimes they do 'snips' too, especially in the early DPs.)

Anyway, I believe 5-15-70 is one of those dates which have TWO sources - the Dead have their own tapes, and the Fillmore crew was also secretly taping. I think the secret Fillmore reels are the ones that circulated. So (aside from the missing songs) there shouldn't be any cuts.

I dunno, I don't remember an aud patch on the 7/31 Dark Star, I'll have to pull that one out. You're probably right.

I did not get any of the official releases of the October 78 shows, couldn't tell ya about that.

Oh yeah, I forgot, the circulating 5/15/70 is from different, non-vault reels. Are they the same mix, I wonder? Same feed, different deck?

I keep meaning to see if the patch was covered in the PITBand from the new patched version of Miller's 12/19/73 (the first example of a "snip" on an official release, perhaps? there are others but I can't think of them now). We were all so focused on the missing bass solo that I think we all forgot about the reel flip in Playin'. In both cases, from listening to the DP I had no clue there was anything missing. It was only a couple years ago when I first heard the aud that I noticed the missing bass solo and patched it in myself.

I just thought of something, wasn't the 5/15 Attics filler on the Golden Road box set version of American Beauty?

Why can't the New Riders set exist at the New Riders site in the LMA?

No reason why it can't! But will it?

And if "A Voice From on High" with Marmaduke and Dave Nelson sitting in can be included in this RT release, couldnt Mama Tried, Sawmill and/or Me and My Uncle have been included as well?

Let's hope so. The 5-2-70 set is there so it wouldn't be unprecedented.

On a completely different note, have you checked out the listening party for RT3-3? Maybe its me but it sounds like crap!! I hope this is some issue of low bit rate streaming.

As for releasing this show as a boxed set, there are so many other boxed sets I would rather see (the French '72 shows, Winterland '74 to name a few) so I am fine with a 3+ release of this, as long as it sounds better than what I hear on that listening party.

You're right, it does sound like crap, and I think you're also right in that it has to be the bitrate. The circulating copy sounds much, much better than this garbage.

Have any shows with guest artists other than Cippolina been released commercially? I've always assumed there would be sticky rights issues that it wasn't worth their trouble to deal with, when there are so many other recordings worth releasing.

I know Ned Lagin performed with the dead on 9/11/74, and a few of the numbers from that show (including playing in the band) appear on DP7. Does anyone know if Ned actually plays on that release?

I don't think he plays on any of the songs on DP 7.

9/11-best Eyes of the year? Hard to beat that jam>eyes.jam>wharf rat.

While not a show, Without a Net has the Eyes with Branford Marsalis and Rockin' the Cradle and RT1-4 both have Hamza. Lee Oskar on RT1-4 as well.

Well Lou, "A Voice From on High" with Marmaduke and Dave Nelson sitting is included on this release. And they appear on the "Cold Jordon" on DP #8 asell.

Also, the Bo Diddley set is included in DP #30 (3/25/72)

When you have gigs upon gigs of GD music and little disposable income, it's tough to justify the expense. Hell, with the existence of this archive and it's wealth of top-notch recordings it's tough to justify spending any money on music. I'll pay to see it live. Period. I'm often enticed to see a band live by way of free music on the web. That's the reality that the recording industry must deal with. P.S. - The last album which moved me to the point I felt behooved to purchase the CD at full-price was Tom Russell's Hotwalker. And I usually buy a CD when I see a band I like at a bluegrass festival or local joint. $15 bucks for the touring band is always do-able. $25 for something I already have is a little insane. Just one man's opinion.
